Shiprock, New Mexico
The dramatic sight of Shiprock, a landmark geological feature that juts out of the otherwise flat New Mexico landscape like the prow of a ship.
That this massive natural feature (1,583 feet tall at its highest point) is considered sacred by the Navajo people comes as no surprise. It would be impossible to live here for anytime without the rock becoming the central reference point against which all locations and distances are measured. The legend is that the rock carried the Navajo here and provided a home for their people (its Navajo name, Tse Bi dahi, means rock with wings).
