Appalachian Mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway
Black and white version of the classic Appalachian photograph of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a road with a mixed history. It was imposed on people for whom these mountains provided a sense of independence and identity (maybe even isolation) as strong as they would have felt had they lived on an island in a distant sea; conversely, construction of these nearly 500 miles of winding two lane roadway provided employment for thousands as part of the New Deal.
This black and white photograph, taken from one of the many viewpoints that look out over the rich, deep carpet of trees that covers huge areas of the Appalachian Mountains, provides a sense of the remoteness and scale of this unique and instantly recognizable landscape.
