Aguereberry Point, Death Valley
The unexpectedly dramatic view from Aguereberry Point, in Death Valley’s Panamint Mountains.
It’s a strange thing but, until you visit, you only imagine the ‘valley’ part of Death Valley. But, by definition, a valley has to have sides. And what sides they are.
The slow, 6-mile drive to Aguereberry Point (recommended by a guy at the general store in Panamint as ‘the best view in America’) starts off as a dusty washboard dirt road before climbing, fairly steeply in places, to an elevation of 6,433-ft. But it’s worth it. As this image shows, the views are immense and the sense of being just a speck on the landscape overwhelming. Our vehicle, a chunky Toyota Sequoia, gives a sense of scale.
