Miner’s Home, Terlingua
The remains of a miner’s home in the Texan ghost town of Terlingua, now famous as an artists’ retreat and home to the great Chili Cook-off.
Dry stone walls topped off with a corrugated iron roof was the architectural style of choice among the miners who flocked to Terlingua, Texas, in the 1800s to dig out cinnabar (from which mercury is extracted). The remains of their homes remain dotted over the hillside that overlooks the abandoned mines. While still described as a ghost town, today’s Terlingua is actually a thriving community of artists, adventure outfitters and ‘characters’.
